In 1970's New York City, especially in the South Bronx, dj's competed for attention. Who could throw the best party with the best music and attract the largest crowd?

The best dj's would play an eclectic mix of danceable music, including disco, funk, Latin styles, and anything special they would discover in their record shopping trips. Unknown or even unpopular music would be used to rock the party. DJ's used tricks and would only play their favorite breaks, or special sections, in the middle of songs. Hip-hop started when dj's would feature mc's who would entertain the crowd with fun rhymes during their parties.

Artists like Afrika Bambaataa combined their favorite "breaks" from songs, especially funk and any music with electronic sounds, to form a new style of music known as electro. "Planet Rock," recorded in 1981, fused funky rhythms with synthesizers and drums inspired by "Trans-Europe Express," a song by a German rock band called Kraftwerk who used synthesizers and electronic drums!
